Making Crayons

This morning we had a new kind of craft/baking time melded into one.  I didn't plan it.  Let's be honest, this was the time that Sesame Street was supposed to be on, but PBS had something else airing and I had one very distraught 3-year-old!

In the midst of the weeping and nearly gnashing of teeth, I remembered that we talked a few days ago about making crayons sometime soon.  Our little box of crayons is full of bits and pieces of once-whole crayons that have met their demise thanks to the little people.  I normally don't care about all those little pieces but that all changes when a certain mister purposefully scatters them throught the living room and then delights in seeing the anxiety grow as they inch their way under the fridge and beyond!  What a little toot!

And, being the tightwad that I am, I vowed to make these little pieces useful rather than throw them away and (gasp!) purchase a new box of crayons.  So we lined a mini muffin tin, put our pieces in, baked 'em at 300* for 9 minutes, let them cool, popped 'em out, and voila! - "new" crayons!

Let me warn you that when you open the oven to take these out you will NOT be greeted with a pleasant odor of fresh bread or dinner ready to be eaten.  It's not an awful smell, just smells like crayons.  Not sure why my brain didn't register that as I was opening the oven, but whatever.  New crayons for free!

"Are they done yet?"

Taking them out of the liners.

Test coloring.

"See them?  Now, please turn away so I can taste them!"
