Not quite following the author's guidelines, but using her idea to repurpose stuff to make a vest, I used a store-bought-hand-me-down (how is this so far for thrifty?) as a sizing template, then made a pattern, and cut out the pieces. The fabric I used was some blue cordouroy I already had and a pair of Chuck's blue jeans I rescued from heading to the trash (because he got too small for them - yay Chuck!). Therefore, a free project! Does it get any better?
I made up how I pieced the vest together as I went along and put a different kind of pocket on, and a functional pocket at that. To attach the front to the back at the shoulder seams I played with the zig-zag settings and got that to work very nicely. I like the way it looks on the denim side because I used brown thread like what is usually used on blue jeans. The stitching is basically invisible on the cordouroy side.
So here are pictures of the vest, just not any of it on the little man since he was in bed when I finished it up. That's how it goes - sew while they are sleeping!
That seam down the middle back is one of the side seams from the pants.
The design on the pocket is from the back pocket on the pants.
I'm thinking another one of these is in order for Easter, maybe to match something on the little girl...
