The load of laundry currently running reminded me of a not-so-funny and yet oh-so-funny from today. But first, let me back up 5 months.
Five months ago I decided to give cloth diapering a chance... and the husband agreed. I know, call me crazy and stop reading this right now if you want, but it's actually not as bad as it seems. I went back and forth in my mind and aloud with Chuck (lucky him) about whether or not to jump in to this and eventually decided that I'd at least try it for a month since what I was spending on the cloth diapers was what I would spend on disposables for a little more than a month and I would, at the end of a month, break even and have nothing to lose.
Four months ago I received the first order of diapers in the mail, "oohed" and "aahed" over how cute they were, got them washed and on the little man. He, the darling that he is, proceeded to poop in every single diaper he wore for the better part of 2 days. At that point Chuck was ready to never change a diaper again. That's okay, I change most of them anyway since I'm the one who is home all day. Joke's on me!
Things are going just fine with the diapering, it's not nearly as difficult or time-consuming as it appears to be, and Caleb's sensitive skin has been quite happy in the cloth. Whew! I am, however, counting the days until it begins to warm up to a reasonable temperature so I can start potty-training him and his manly poops (what is it about boys?!) can go directly into the toilet instead of me hoping they will fall off easily and then having to go outside and use the hose to fertilize the yard yet again.
Which brings me to today.
Today it was 14 degrees when I peeled myself out of bed. Yay. We were a few degrees warmer around 9am when the boy pooped. No big deal, go change him and... it's not the "falling off easily" kind. I can handle this. Put the jacket on to wash it off outside only to find out that the hose will in fact freeze when it is 18 degrees outside. I resort to using the rain barrell to try to get a little more off, then dragging the diaper on the ice-covered ground and leaving it outside to deal with later. Later comes (tonight) and I retrieve the diaper to wash it, along with the rest of the stash, and it is frozen. Duh, Melissa! I don't know why, but I found this hilarious so now I'm sharing with you. Lucky you.
In case you are curious, I got the diapers from here thanks to a friend who let me in on her great find. These prices are MUCH cheaper than I've seen on other cloth diapers but seem to be the same great quality. Ours are going strong and I'm very happy. I do one load of diaper laundry every 2-3 days and it has only raised our water bill a couple of dollars each month. (This would not have worked out well to do with Abby while in the apartments at SWBTS!) Anyway, hopefully we don't have any more frozen diapers, but I'm not going to hold my breath!
