Conversations with Abby

First of all, the things that come out of an almost-4-year-old's mouth are mostly hilarious.  Mostly.  Sometimes they are flat out annoying and hurtful, like when she says day after day "I don't like that (food that was prepared).  I don't want to eat it.  It's yucky."  Then it is time for a conversation about not saying things that will make people sad and being thankful for what was given to you.  Ah, parenthood.

ANYWAY... back to the point of this post.

We've had a few conversations with Abby over the past couple of weeks that have left us in stitches.  Too bad I didn't write them all down right away, but I did manage to record 2 of them, one of which happened tonight at dinner.

Me:  Abby, who is your favorite person?
A:  Clifford.  (She just got some Clifford books at the library so he's fresh on her mind.)
Chuck:  No, Clifford is a dog.  Who is your favorite person?
A:  Emily Elizabeth.  (Clifford's "owner")
Me:  Emily Elizabeth is pretend.  Those books are pretend.  Who is your favorite real person?
A:  Me!

Right after we got back from our trip to The Woodlands and Chuck back from Guatemala the kids were playing on the floor with Chuck.  Abby had the otoscope toy from the play doctor kit but was pretending to examine Chuck's eyes with it.

A:  Daddy, what's the white?
(Chuck looks to the Biology major for the answer)
Me:  That's the sclera.
A:  What's the blue?
Me:  Iris.  (And thinking "black" is coming next I'm preparing to say "pupil"...)
A:  What's the red?
Me:  Tired!

I was debating whether or not to tell her the truth, that those are blood vessels, etc. but decided against it because I knew what would come next -- "Mommy, why are Daddy's eyes bleeding?" or something to that effect.

So now you have a sampling of the conversations that we have around here!
